what is urology?
Urology is the specialty of medicine that deals with the basics, diagnosis and therapy of diseases of the urinary organs and the genital organs. In detail, the urologist treats diseases of the kidneys , ureters , urinary bladder, urethra, testes , the draining spermatic tract such as the prostate and the hormonal glands such as the adrenal glands . Common diseases are urinary stones , tumors, infections and malformations that can affect any organ.
The urologist is responsible for diseases, functional disorders, malformations and injuries to the urinary organs and genital organs. In addition to preventive care, the urologist takes care of diagnosis, therapy and the corresponding aftercare, including rehabilitation.
What does a urologist do?
The urologist is often referred to as a âmale doctorâ. In fact, diseases of the male genital organs are just one of the tasks of the urologist. But the field of activity of the urologist encompasses more. As described at the beginning, the field of activity of urology covers the entire area of ââthe urinary organs and genital organs.
In the area of ââthe urinary organs, the urologist deals with diseases and treatment of the kidneys, urinary bladder, ureters and urethra. This mainly affects urinary tract disorders, both in women and in men. Here, for example, urinary stones are a common disease.
In the area of ââthe genital organs, the urologist only deals with the male sex. Here testicles, epididymis, sperm ducts, seminal vesicles, penis and prostate belong to his area of ââactivity. For example, erectile dysfunction and impotence are treated here (andrology).
The urologist deals with the topic of preventive care across all areas, in particular the early detection of tissue changes and tumors. The urologist diagnoses changes in the testicles or the structures adjacent to the urinary tract, such as the anus and pelvic floor (proctology), by means of a palpation examination.
