A/Professor Amal Abou-Hamden is a leading Australian Neurosurgeon with a unique combination of expertise and advanced post-graduate fellowship training in Vascular Neurosurgery, Paediatric Neurosurgery, and Epilepsy Surgery.
Following her return to South Australia, A/Prof Abou-Hamden has had the privilege of introducing a number of highly specialised surgical procedures and techniques, including keyhole surgery for brain aneurysms, cerebral revascularisation, and high flow bypass surgery for giant and complex aneurysms, Moya Moya Disease and stroke prevention. Prof Abou-Hamden additionally specialises in surgery for high grade and complex arterio-venous malformations (AVM), intractable epilepsy for children and adults, cortical mapping and awake brain tumor surgery, skull base surgery, and endoscopic brain surgery.
She continues to be at the forefront of advancing neurosurgical care, working within multidisciplinary neurovascular and neuro-oncology teams, incorporating the latest evidence-based technology and clinical protocols to improve patient recovery and achieve the best possible outcomes. She is internationally renowned for her expertise in these areas through her peer-reviewed publications and lectures at local, National and International Conferences.
She is a Senior Staff Specialist at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital and the Royal Adelaide Hospital, where she is also the Principal Supervisor for the Neurovascular Surgery Fellowship Program and for the Neurosurgical training program. She is a clinical Associate Professor at the University of Adelaide, faculty of Health & Medical Sciences and a Neurosurgery Examiner at the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.
