What is Podiatry?
Podiatry is the non-medical treatment of the foot. The med. Foot care and treatment is classified as a medical professional activity by law and therefore requires permission from the responsible health department. Since January 1st, 2003 med. Podiatrist / med. Only name the podiatrist or podiatrist who can prove either the permission according to § 1, sentence 1 Podologists Act (PodG) or the authorization or state recognition according to § 10, paragraph 1 PodG.
Podiatry treatment is medical foot care at the highest level. Treatment is generally carried out according to professional standards and according to the latest state of medicine. Only sterile instruments are used. Podiatry develops along with medicine. The practical and theoretical training is therefore extremely important.
What does a Podiatrist?
The podiatrist (from the Greek “podos” for “foot”) is one of the medical professions. A podiatrist cares for the feet, gives tips on proper care and also carries out special treatments for diseased feet. In addition to treating the nail bed and removing warts and corns, this includes making an artificial nail replacement or removing corneas. Podologists work independently in their own podiatry practice with or without health insurance approval, as freelancers in a joint practice or as employees in clinics or special foot clinics with other professional groups, for example with doctors, orthopedic shoemakers, physiotherapists and occupational therapists.
The profession of podiatrist is closely related to that of medical podiatrist, who cares for healthy feet and prevents diseases. A medical podiatrist cuts the toenails, performs foot massages and explains how independent care of the feet works. According to the Podiatry Act of 2002, podiatrists and medical podiatrists must complete a two-year training course with a subsequent state examination.
