Dr Angela Bennett

Family Physicians

I’m originally from Newcastle and graduated from Newcastle University in 1991. Much of my early working

years were in Canberra, initially mainly in Emergency Medicine and Paediatrics. I started General Practice training in Canberra in 2002 with rural training in Bega in 2003. In 2007 I moved back to Newie where I worked at a small family Practice in East Maitland for nine years. Here I learned the value of continuity of care in a small town, and find it very rewarding caring for people and their families over the long-term. I can’t pick any particular area of interest – the variety of General Practice is another drawcard for me. The opportunity arose to relocate to the paradise of this area 2016 and we are now here to stay. I have been working in the area since early 2017. When I’m not at work you’ll find me walking the dogs, queuing at the markets, gardening or in the kitchen trying or inventing new recipes.

What is a Family Physician?

Family physicians possess unique attitudes, skills and knowledge which qualify them to provide ongoing, comprehensive medical care to each member of the family. A family physician is a doctor who has received at least three years of specialty training (beyond medical school) in the broad disciplines of primary care. These include in-depth coverage of adult and pediatric medicine, preventive care and OB care. Because of their training, family physicians are uniquely qualified to serve as Primary Care Providers.

The cornerstone of family medicine is an ongoing, personal patient-physician relationship focused on integrated care. Your family physician is trained to provide optimal medical care by looking at the whole person, rather than focusing on just one organ system. In addition to diagnosing and treating acute and chronic illnesses, your family physician provides routine health screenings and counseling on lifestyle changes in an effort to prevent illnesses before they develop.

What Family Physicians Do?

Schooling: Family physicians complete extensive training beyond medical school in order to be able to provide the best possible patient care, including a three-year residency; in-depth training across a human lifespan from birth to death; and potential additional fellowships and qualifications in concentrations like adolescent medicine, emergency medicine, faculty development, and more. Family medicine residents participate in integrated inpatient and outpatient learning and receive training in six major medical areas — pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, internal medicine, psychiatry and neurology, surgery, and community medicine.

Practice: Family physicians provide the majority of care for America’s underserved rural and urban populations. In addition to diagnosing and treating illness, they also provide preventive care, including routine checkups, health-risk assessments, immunization and screening tests, and personalized counseling on maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Family physicians also manage chronic illness, often coordinating care provided by other subspecialists. From heart disease, stroke and hypertension, to diabetes, cancer, and asthma, family physicians provide ongoing, personal care for the nation’s most serious health problems.
