What is Radiology?

The specialist in radiology is a highly specialized specialist who primarily deals with imaging diagnostics. But what exactly does this mean? What is radiology anyway and what does a radiologist do? The following article answers this and introduces the specialist in radiology.

Radiology is a medical specialty and essentially comprises the detection of diseases using imaging methods. The imaging procedures include x-rays, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRT), ultrasound examination and other examination methods. In addition to diagnostics, radiological therapy methods are also used, such as radiation treatment and therapy.

A radiologist is known as a radiologist. In order to acquire the specialist title for radiology, a five-year advanced training course must be completed in accordance with the specifications of the respective regional medical association.

What is a radiologist?

A radiologist is a medical specialist who specializes in performing and interpreting the above imaging procedures. It acts as an interface to all medical fields, such as oncology, surgery, orthopedics, etc.

But the work of a radiologist is not limited to non-invasive procedures. This also includes minimally invasive treatments and diagnostic procedures. For example, biopsies with imaging and vascular punctures or recanalizing procedures (such as placing a stent, a vascular prosthesis).

What does a radiologist do?

A radiologist examines patients who have been referred to him by other doctors such as general practitioners, orthopedic specialists or specialists in internal medicine. He cannot assign patients to himself. One of his main tasks is to examine patients using technical equipment and imaging processes. With the use of modern technologies such as MRI or X-ray machines, the inside of patients is screened and examined in order to detect diseases at an early stage. Using this high-performance diagnostics and modern imaging methods, the patient can be examined without performing an operation on a patient only for the purpose of diagnosis. So one of the main tasks of the radiologist is diagnosis. Thanks to his diagnostic options, the radiologist is an objective advisor to the treating doctor. With his diagnosis he has to support other doctors in making the right decisions about the therapy used to treat the patient.
